Mathphobia

Mathphobia is the fear of having to do math. Personally, I do not have it, but I do empathize with people who do. Math doesn’t come naturally to everyone. It is something we each have to work on in order to get better at. For me, I love problem solving and getting a concise answer each time. Its relaxing to figure out the answer to problems that have a definite solution. There is a set formula for everything in math and I appreciate the simplicity. Ever problem has a solution. Whereas, in English there isn’t a set answer when it comes to writing. It depends on you to be creative and is subjective based on the teacher you have. English is mostly just other people looking at your paper and deciding if they like it or not. It’s based off the personal preference of the teacher to decide if your work is good enough. Whereas, in math the teacher will look at your paper and know right away if your answer is wrong or right. I enjoy having a set answer. Too many things in life are unknown. Math is one of the only things in life that has a definite answerMath provides an escape where the answer is always known.
Ever since I was little, I enjoyed math. It was the subject I found came easy to me.  In the third grade we had to do these times tables tests. We started easy with 0’s, 1’s, and 2’s. Then, it would gradually get higher all the way until 12. We were given the tests once a week and had to beat a time of one minute. I was always excited to try and beat the timer. It was a thrill when I would get them all right and in time. I felt intelligent. It was a good feeling I associated with math which is what helped me out today to love math so much.
I would have to say algebra is my favorite subject in math. I like solving for x because it reminds me of a scavenger hunt. You have all these clues in order to solve the mystery. I was fortunate enough to learn algebra at the age of 11 due to a math camp I went to.
However, I would say that Geometry is my weakest subject. In high school I didn’t like it very much. I thought dealing with shapes would be fun and entertaining but, it ended up being my worst grade in math yet. I learned from my experience failing the regent. So, in a sense I guess you could say I had mathphobia with geometry.
Overall, I think math is something we shouldn’t fear but embrace. If you find yourself troubled in math the only thing you can do is work on it. It would be worth it in the end. Our world is filled with math equations whether we realize it or not. There’s no getting around it. So, you should learn to adjust to math because it will help you out in the end.

  1. I am not sure I agree with "Math doesn’t come naturally to everyone." It has been shown that babies are doing math in the form of spotting patterns, stacking, etc. We all have the ability, I just think some of us get it nurtured better than others. I think it is more about mindset and perseverance.
